"Alright then. Today we shall teach all of you how to fight. Unlike yesterday we will do this together so all of you will be working with each other." Lameda said drawing everyones attention. Auriga and Xelain strolled down from the cave to see what their leader was going to have them do. "First off we will pair you up and then teach you the basics. Auriga, Rand, Xelain, and Cassia will watch and help when necessary. Larue and Tolin will be the first pair, Arden and Kern will be the next pair, and last Rowan will be paired with me." she got each pair together and separated them so they would not be running into each other. She had chosen to be with Rowan so she could test the new pups strength and see what he had already learned by himself. "All right let's first start with getting use to the ways to dodge an attack. You can either go to the left, right, and behind if your enemy is in front of you. Now I want one wolf to paw at their partner and then the partner to jump to the right, left, or back. Understood. Good." she faced Rowan and pawed at a slow speed.

Rowan was surprised at first at how little Lameda seemed to expect from him. He dodged her blows with ease, but kept all of his focus on her. For all I know, she's probobly just testing me and trying to make me slip up, he thought, still staring at her intently. The pressure that he put on himself to resist attacking back was almost too great to bear- yet he continued to dodge gracefully, his gaze never wavering. Tolin stared hard at his sister, a malicious gleam in his eyes. Larue took note of this, though her expression remained unchanged. The black pup snarled as deeply and ferociously as he could manage, trying to scare Larue before he even made a move. Larue- however- was too busy calculating Tolin's next move to worry about his 'menacing snarl.' Before Tolin knew what he was going to do, Larue had planned her counter move. Tolin sank back onto his hind legs, obviously getting ready to pounce. When he did, Larue quickly jumped forward and to the right, letting Tolin jump right past her. Tolin spun around, confused about what had just happened. Larue yawned. " If I remember correctly, Lameda said to start off with pawing- not pouncing." Tolin swiped a paw at her, but she quickly moved her head backwards to avoid it. " Good. Now actually try to challenge me at bit." Tolin was furious, though he tried to keep his head. Alright, Larue thinks she's so much better than everyone because she's smart. I'm stronger than her, so all I need to do is plan out my attacks better. He stared at Larue, who seemed puzzled by his sudden silence. Tolin smiled, then charged at Larue, making it look like he was trying to put his two former blows into one. Larue dodged this easily, but was unprepared when Tolin whirled around and tackled her. Larue rolled onto the ground, throwing him off and into the ground, but was astonished that her brother had been able to pull that off. She shook the dirt from her coat and smiled innocently. " Mother?" she said to Cassia, who was sitting nearby, " Could we switch roles now?" Tolin pulled his ears back at this, knowing that his sister's devious mind was at work. " Okay, Kern? I'd like you to 'attack' Arden," Rand said to his pups, sitting down as he prepared to watch them. Kern was dissapointed that Rowan got to spend time with Lameda and not him, but he didn't want to show his dissapointment. He lunged at Arden, barely clipping her shoulder with her paw. " Arden, try to be just a tad faster and try to find out what he's planning to do." Arden nodded, and stood on her toes, ready for the next time. Kern pawed again, but this time Arden was much too fast for him. He tried with his other paw- but was again outmatched. Then, he had an idea. He pawed her lightly, letting her escape, then quickly lashed out with the other, aiming his blow at her paws. Before Arden realized what was going on, she had her legs thrown from under her and was on the ground. She smiled as she got up, dusting herself off. " That was good Kern, I really didn't expect that." Kern blushed slightly, then thanked her.

Lameda nodded in approval at Rowan's skills. She could see that he knew what he was doing and so she decided to up the skill. She pawed at him slightly faster and quickly backed him up until a tree was behind him with bushes to the side. She then lunged at him knowing he would hit the tree or bush either way he went. Auriga watched the pups and couldn't help, but feel a bloom of pride rise up in her chest. The pups were smart and already knew how to start to predict where their oppenant would go. Xelain walked up to her and whispered in her ear "So who do you suppose is the best?" he asked causing Auriga to frown. "Well they all have there own skills and are equally smart. Tolin will make a good leader, Larue is a great stratigist, Kern with training will make an excillent herb dealer and trap maker, and Arden is extremely fast making her dangerous in a fight along with delivering reports or messages from the packs. It's near impossible to determine, which one is the best of em." she whispered back to the elder. Xelain nodded in agreement, but he felt that something would change within the pack. He had no idea what but he knew that it would happen

Rowan realized what Lameda was doing and thought quickly. Surely there was some way he wouldn't get pinned down? He devised a plan, though he had no idea if it would work. Instead of dodging to the left or right, Rowan lunged at Lameda's chest. Though he was smaller, he delayed the impact just enough for him to skillfully slip out from under her paws. He sat on the gound, panting slightly but still alert incase Lameda planned to attack again. After a while, everyone had had their turn of attacking or defending. " Lameda- could we please take a break or somthing? I'm not complaining, it's just- my body's not used to this yet, and -frankly- we're all exhausted." Larue knew when to stop pushing herself, and since no one else would ask, she had decided to. Rand nodded in agreement. " The pups do seem rather tired, but I think they'll be eager to fight again after they have a good meal. Speaking of that- we should probobly get some breakfast. I'd love to teach the pups to hunt today, but I think that's something we have to save for a bit later- and besides, they've already started to learn how to fight today. Cassia overheard the conversation and bounded over to her mate. " Is there going to be a hunting patrol? If there is, would it be okay if I joined? I haven't hunted in forever, and I've been going crazy." The four pups gathered around their parents, flopped down in the shade. Only Rowan remained standing, ignoring the others and walking over to the stream to cool off. (( Sucky-ness post, but it's 11 at night and I'm lazy. xD))

"I see why we can't, but I think the pups should go. However, they won't do anything themselves, but I think it would be best if they watched. So they get the feel for what happens during a hunt. Auriga, Xelain, Rowain, and myself will stay behind to watch the camp. This way you can also spend some time with your children," Lameda stated with a smile towards Rand whom she thought wanted to spend time with his pups "However, this is only an opinion and it is really up to you two to decide." she added to Cassia and Rand. Xelain's ears perked up at the mention of his name in the conversation. He had started to doze sometime after they stopped fighting. He sighed I'm getting far to old, but this pack needs all the members they can get The others may not have noticed, but he was getting stiffer and his coat greyer. Auriga found the advise reasonable, but couldn't help but feel there was another reason. And why did she want Rowan to stay espiecally when Lameda wanted all the other youngsters to go. Her thoughts went over many other possible reasons and she did not like the answers she was gettin. Does Lameda still not trust, Rowan? she wondered and glanced at the wolf who was by the river. She trusted the wolf to a point, but she was this way with the other pack members at the beginning too. She frowned and dismissed her thoughts so she could concentrate on what was currently happening.

Rand thought for a minute then replied, " Well, I would like to spend time with them, but I think it would be better if they could see how a whole pack hunts. This way they can see how it's all choreographed. Maybe one or two wolves could still stay behind if they're not up for hunting, but I think it would be best if the majority of the pack came along. Rowan's ears perked up at this. He was curious to see how Lameda would regard Rand's suggestion, and hoped that he would be trusted enough to be allowed to join the pack on their hunt. Larue was too busy thinking about her earlier adventures to notice the other three pups running in circles around her, anticipating the wonder of hunting. Larue, however, had already experianced bloodlust, and hoped that she would be able to refrain herself from wanting to join the others. It's all about self-control. I can but my mind above the need and control my actions. She said this to herself, and tried to believe it. Cassia watched her pups with a smile, knowing how excited they felt- knowing that she almost felt as excited herself. She hadn't hunted in a very long time, and that fact had annoyed her for quite some time. She hated feeling vulnurable and helpless, and wanted to prove to herself that she was still an asset to the pack. Her gaze wandered to Larue, who she noticed didn't look very excited. She recalled that the pup had caugt her first kill earlier in the day, and wondered if it had something to do with that. She went over to her daughter and sat next to her, curling her white tail around the young wolf. Larue smiled at her mother, showing that she was alright. Tolin bounded over to his mother. " Do you think there will be many birds around when we go hunting?" Cassia laughed at the wary tone in her child's voice. " Yes dear, but don't worry- as long as it's not bigger than you- it can't hurt you."

"I see, then Xelain would you please stay behind, and guard the cave while we are gone." Lameda asked the wolf and hated leaving the old wolf behind. Truth be told she noticed that it was getting harder for him to do everyday chores and she knew she could trust the wolf to handle a situation that occured when the pack was gone. "As you wish." he said with a nod of his head and she nodded in return. "I think it best that we head out now before it gets dark. I will lead the pack with Rand and Tolin following me, Cassia and Arden next with Larue and Rowan behind them, and last Auriga and Kern. (did I get everyone?)When we have the prey in sight we will group together and create a plan." This way almost all the pups have someone to teach them what to look and smell for. Also, Auriga in the back can make sure nothing goes amiss with our group. she thought after she explained the order of the hunt. "Gather together now." Lameda ordered, but not sternly so she wouldn't be taken for a power house leader.

Rowan smiled at being paired with Larue, and thanked the gods that Lameda had let him go with the rest of the pack of their hunt. The group lined up in their correct order, and waited to be told to set out. Rowan stared at Larue, trying to catch her gaze. When he finally did, he almost gasped- but discuised it as a cough. " So, you've hunted before." Larue was surprised at this, mainly because it was a statement and not a question. " H-how did you know?" Rowan smiled. " I can tell from the look of bloodlust in your eyes." When Larue didn't answer, he tried another angle. " It felt amazing, didn't it." ( I feel like I'm talking about sex or drugs. xDDD) Larue kept her mouth shut, and Rowan took the hint to shut up. In just a few seconds, he got an idea. " Lameda, since the pups won't be hunting- would you like me to stay with them unseen so that I can explain to them what you're doing and the reasons behind your actions while still keeping them safe? I'm new to the pack anyways, so I'm not sure if I'll understand your formations just yet." Kern looked up at Auriga and smiled. " Is there anything you want to teach me before we set off?" Larue turned her head to her her brother more clearly, and wanted to know what Auriga's answer was. If there was anything she could learn- she wanted to learn it. Arden shook with anticipation and nuzzled her face into her mother's coat. " Settle down, Arden." She said, nudging her daughter into the correct formation. Arden obeyed and kept a serious face as inside- she couldn't wait to get started. Tolin stared forward, but ever so often he'd look up at his father to see if he looked proud of him. Rand would always meet his gaze and smile, knowing how excited Tolin must be.

"You have a point there. You may stay with them while we are hunting." Lameda said though she was still feeling uncomfortable about him. It will be fine. she tried to convince herself, but couldn't all the way. "Well first you have to learn to sniff the air while running. That's the main part of hunting. You will smell the pray before you get close to it. I'll point out the smells to all of you as we run." Auriga said to both Kern and Larue who she had notice was listening in. "Let's move." Lameda said up ahead of them and she started to jog into the forest only to pick up speed untill they were running at a decent pace. She had to remind herself not to go to fast and she soon started to sniff the air. "Lift your nose into the air and tell me what you smell." Auriga said to Kern easily keeping up with the speed Lameda had set for them.

"When you hunt, you have to use all of your senses. Block everything out except for the things that will help you accomplish your goal." Rand told Tolin, who soaked in everything he had said. Rowan's expression stayed neutral, but inside he was smiling. Kern was the first to answer Auriga's question. " I smell a smell that I smelled when I first met my father. It's a rather strange scent, but I've smelled it quite often around the den." He smiled, but remained facing forward, focused on staying with the pack. " Oh- I smell it too. I saw one before when I was with Cassia- she said it was a 'rabbit'." Suddenly, Larue's senses were on full alert, and her ears perked up. " What's that?" She asked, keeping her voice down. She smelled the incrediabally musky smell of a group of large animals, a few hundred yards downwind of the pack. The rest of the pack smelled it too, and they suddenly became very stealthy and silent, the pups hearts beating rapidly in their chests.

"Deer." Auriga said her ears perked and her gaze ahead of her. Lameda silently shifted course and slowed their pace down greatly. She sniffed the air again and found the deers exact position. She stopped when they were parallel to the deer, but far enough that they wouldn't be detected. "Auriga and Cassia go to the other side of the deer. We are going to get the first one the strays from the others or falls behind. Rand you stay on this side of them and I want you to keep pace with the slowest of them. When you find one that's tiring attack it. I will be behind the deer and be backing you up when you go in. Cassia and Auriga when that happens you slow down and surround the deer that we have. Understand?" she asked her pack quietly. Auriga nodded for herself and glanced at the pups who appeared to be extremely excited. She couldn't help but grin at their faces.

(( Why's it always deer with you? xD Btw- deer don't have herds..but oh well)) Rowan silently nudged the pups upwards onto a safe hill where they could remain unseen- but could still witness the whole event. As the adult wolves got into position, the pups shoved each-other, trying to get the best view. Larue spotted a bush and crouched under it, crawling forwards so she could have a perfect view. Meanwhile, the other three pups were too busy trying to get ahead of one-another to notice that she had gone. "Shut up and sit still." Rowan hissed, nipping at the pups. He was thouroughly annoyed with them, and personally wanted to see Lunaris's hunting tactics. The pups settled down and agreed to take turns- remaining silent. Rand slid to one side of the group and stayed hidden. I'll need to get them running for this to work. Suddenly, he barked and charged through the trees towards them. The deer bolted, and instantly Rand found the weakest. It was a very large female with a split hoof. She couldn't run very well, and Rand quickly caught up to her. Larue watched in awe as her father bit at the heels of the deer, then launched onto her back, digging his teeth into her fur. Larue stood there drooling at the sight, longing for the sweet taste of meat. Rowan turned to the pups, checking on them. Noticing that Larue was gone, he turned in a circle, trying to find her. When he spotted her under a bush, he smiled. The pups all just stood there, motionless and speechless- amazed at the sight of their fellow pack members.

Lameda watched as Rand barked and started running. Her gaze fell on Rand as he jumped onto the back of one of the deer and she sped up. She caught up to its' side and jumped right at it. Her force knocked it off balance more then it already was and she bit firmly into one of its' thighs. Auriga moved forward and nipped it from the side of the deer knowing that the deer would soon fall. Just as she had thought within seconds the deer was down and Lameda cut its' throat swiftly since it was still alive on the ground(For some reason I'm thinking of Halo and how I always refer to the enemy as it....) "Rand are you alright?" Auriga asked the other wolf who had appeared to have quite a wild ride on the back of the deer. She wanted to laugh at how funny the picture had been, but held it in. Xelain sighed as he stiffly lowered himself to the ground. He felt so old...and was getting extremely tired.I have to guard the cave... he thought, but a inner voice told him the cave would be fine. This comforted him greatly and he relaxed closing his eyes. His face was of perfect peace and he smiled knowing what he had accomplished in his life had been of some importance. Seconds passed and the wolf fell into a peaceful endless sleep.

Rand laughed at Auriga's comment, and replied, " Yah, it was actually quite fun." Suddenly there were cheers heard in the distance as the little pups yipped and pranced around, excited that they had just witnessed their first group kill. They charged down the kill, followed by an indifferent looking Rowan. The pups gathered around their pack, congradulating them on their 'awesome' kill. " Now there's something else you pups have to learn today," Rand said, his bright green eyes sparkling with mischief, " you have to learn how to help the pack by doing hard labor." The pups looked up at him, slightly fearful. " Well, anyways- helping us to carry our kill back will make you all stronger. Immediately, all four pups latched on to the deer and started attempting to yank it towards the den. Rand bowed to Lameda, nodding for her to go ahead. It only really took two wolves to pull a deer back to camp. " Auriga? Would you like to be the lookout? That way we won't get attacked while pulling this back." A playful gleam shone in his eyes. It's just a suggestion, but that way we don't get attacked by strange deer-stealing monsters!" The pups all gasped at this, wondering what strange creatures lurked in the shadows. " Don't worry, we'll protect you." Cassia said reassuringly. She grabbed part of the carcass in her jaws and started to pull. Rowan stayed behind them, staring at his paws. " I'll be the rear guard." He said in a monotone voice. Once back in camp, the group laid the deer down at the edge of the pack. " Something dosen't feel right.." Cassia said, shivering, " where's Xelain?"

Lameda looked to the back of the cave also feeling uneasy and spotted Xelain laying down. "Xelain..." she said and stared at him waiting to see his body move from breathing. After a few seconds she nudged him gently and still he did not move. She took a step back and did her best to compose herself. He was old. You should have saw this coming she harshly scolded herself, but that did not lessen the shock of it. Auriga came up to Lameda worried and she saw Xelain. "Xelain are you alright?" Xelain?" she turned to Lameda and saw the pack leader struggling to compose herself. "No..." Auriga said weakly and she looked away not wanting everyone to see her face. Lameda turned around "Xelain...Xelain has passed on..." she told her pack unsure how to truly state it. She had never been the one who was good at handling a lost comrade and now as pack leader she was truly at a lost. "He was a wise wolf and I'm happy to have been at his side these last few days. He was wise and I think almost everyone could go to him for advice. He was a great wolf, but I am happy he could pass away in such a peaceful manner. He wouldn't want us to cry and would probably laugh. He would have wanted us to be happy and to move on..." one tear escaped from her eye, but that was all that she allowed. "Thank you Xelain for everythiing you taught us and for being an elder all of us could look up to." Auriga said bowing her head and her fur was wet from tears.

Cassia stared down at the fallen wolf, her emotions a mixed-up mess. She buried her nose in his flank and thought about the good memories, and the first day she had met him. She recalled that she herself had been the first to meet the wise old wolf, and she hated to see such a wondeful spirit trampled by time. " Xelain, I will never forget you. You were a wondeful wise wolf- and we we all miss you very much." She kept her eyes closed and turned away from the others as she left the cave. The beautiful waterfall seemed to taunt her, and she wished that for once it's beauty could be put on hold for a moment. Lameda was right, we wouldn'tve wanted us to cry. As she choked back her tears, she thought of the wondeful things that were still with them in the world. They had a wonderful home, kind pack mates, and four new pups which radiated life. Cassia found it sort of ironic that soon after witnessing the birth of four new lives, Xelain had lost his own. She spotted her pups sitting together down the ridge, huddled in confusion. She walked slowly down to them, and hushed them gently. " What happened Mommy?" Arden asked, noticing dried tears and sadness on her mother's face. Cassia sat down, trying to figure out how to tell them. " A natural occurance of life happened earlier this evening." She wanted to explain to the pups what death was without scaring them, and was sad that she was using Xelain's death as her example. " When an animal gets very old, it begins to get slightly weaker. Eventually, the animal's time in this world passes, and it dies peacefully- and no longer continues to live." Cassia's eyes grew cloudy and she stared at her paws. " Unfortunately, Xelain's time with us has come to an end." The pups all started crying, each of them shocked at such a big change in how the world was viewed by them. Tolin buried himself in his mother's fur as he cried, and eventually the other three pups followed suit. Rand sat in the cave, as once again he found himself the only adult male in the pack. His gaze rested on the body and he frowned, knowing that he would miss the wolf greatly. " We should get him out of here before the pups see- I'm not sure if they'd be able to handle it." He sighed and looked up at the other two females, wondering what they were planning.

"Yes....your right. Let's bring him into the forest and burn the body. I don't want any animals to....."She couldn't finish the sentence and Auriga nodded her head knowing what Lameda meant. "Let's get this over with." Auriga wiped a tear away with her paw and they began to move Xelain. He was surprisingly light and it only took a while before they were able to get him into the forest. They then began to find leaves and twigs so help start the fire. Soon Xelain was hidden underneath and it looked like someone had made a pile of leaves. They did not cry as they did it knowing that Xelain wouldn't have wanted that and worked steadily. An hour later a fire was made and they stared into the flames silently. Soon all there was was ash and a black spot on the ground. They returned to the cave and Lameda went to Cassia. "Did you explain to the pups?" she asked hoping that the mother had. She didn't think she would be able to explain it to them without falling apart something she was doing her best not to do. I have to be strong for my pack. the thought ran over and over in her head and currently it was the only thing keeping her together.
