IGNORE THIS: ( I trust KW much more than other things when I have to print muffins somewhere else.) Christa Russell Mrs. Coleman Biology Per.5 9-1-09 Stem cell research is a very controversial topic and is seen in either a positive or negative light by many countries. Stem cells are a type of cell that regenerate quickly, therefore making it very useful for scientific studies. Scientists believe that stem cells can be used to find treatments for many injuries and illnesses, and can even help to find cures for some of the major diseases. The reason that stem cell research is so controversial is that stem cells are usually taken from a fertilized egg during the early stages of development, therefore killing the would-be human. Many countries consider this murder, but others still support stem cell research. Three countries that have very strong views on the subject are the United States of America, China, and Africa. In the United States, the acceptance of using stem cell research has been widely debated over the years. Recently, President Barack Obama signed a law that declared stem cell research legal in the U.S. He did this because he personally believed that scientific developments are extremely important during this day in age, and that it is crucial to support breakthroughs seeing as how so many people are killed by diseases each year. In California even, Proposition 71, which was approved by California voters, funds three hundred million dollars a year towards stem cell research. Seeing as how the previous President, George Bush, had banned stem cell research, these were both important steps for America. Although some Americans think that stem cell research is inhumane, most agree that it's worth it in order to potentially save millions of lives. In China, however, people have taken to the idea of stem cell research much easier and more quickly than other countries. This is mainly because, unlike in our society, the people of China do not consider the fertilized egg to be a human, and therefore have no problem with using it for scientific research. Because of their different views, Chinese scientists have been doing stem cell research for many years, whereas in America they've only been doing it for a short time. Even though Chinese scientists should be more experianced, some of their research has been poorly organized and has resulted in false claims of breakthroughs as well as plagiarism. In this way, people of China were very open about investigating the benefits of stem cell research, but weren't very serious or careful with their experimentations. Another country that has strong opinions on stem cell research is Africa. In the case of Africa, there are two different policies. The first belongs to South Africa. Their people are avidly experimenting with stem cell research and support it as strongly as many other countries do and have made many discoveries. In the rest of Africa, however, the situation is quite different. People there show no interest in stem cell research, but not necessarily because of ethical reasons. The cause, most likely, is because of lack of finances and technological advances. Most of Africa is very poor, and even though they suffer greatly from diseases, they have no way of attempting to cure these because of their lack of money and scientific tools. This observation shows how different Africa and South Africa are from each other in terms of stem cell research and overall scientific influence. Depending on their ethics and technological and financial abilities, many countries develop specific views and opinions about the controversial study of stem cell research. In my opinion, all countries that are financially able should partake in the study of stem cells because it's important to try and save existing lives, even if that might mean sacrificing a few organisms that aren't even human. Throughout history, many unnecessary lives have been ended because of expansion and overall growth. Stem cell research, however, can create advancements that will change the world for the better by utilizing live cells and studying them instead of sitting back and pretending that the cures will be found magically in some other, more humane study instead of taking advantage of the resources that they have. This is why stem cell research is such a controversial topic and is so widely debated throughout the world. www.msnbc.msn.com/id/29586269/www.ruf.rice.edu/~neal/temp/ST%20Policy/index/SCBooklet/SCbooklet.pdfwww.drugresearcher.com/Research-management/China-the-land-of-opportunity-for-stem-cell-researchwww.mbbnet.umn.edu/scmap.html

Christa Russell Period 5 10- 7 - 09 IB Biology 11
Background: A Potato is a vegetable composed primarily of carbohydrates, H2O and sugars. This experiment involves water potential, which is the sum of the pressure potential and the solute potential. Following the concentration gradient, water will always move from an area of high water potential ( high concentration; higher free energy and more water molecules) to an area of lower water potential ( low concentration: less free energy and fewer water molecules.) This process is called osmosis and is an example of diffusion. In the experiment, diffusion will occur and the substances will be able to be classified as either hypertonic or hypotonic.
Question: What effects will osmosis and diffusion have on the water potential?
Hypothesis: Independant Variable- amount of sucrose solution in each cup Controlled Variables- kind of Potatoes - 50mL of each solution - size of cups - 3cm Potato cylinders - 4 Potato cylinders in each cup - type of cup - lack of skin on Potatoes
To find the effects osmosis and diffusion will have on water potential, cut the Potato into pieces and watch them to see how they are affected by the different types of solutions they're in, and how much sucrose solution is used- 50mL in each cup- the tempurature, and the masses of the cylinders before and after they are put into the solutions. By doing this, the effect on water potential will be discovered.
Materials: 50mL Sucrose Solution 0.2M 50mL Sucrose Solution 0.4M 50mL Sucrose Solution 0.6M 50mL Sucrose Solution 0.8M 50mL Sucrose Solution 1.0M 50mL Distilled Water Cork Borer with Plunger Balance Potato Plastic Wrap Paper Towels
Procedure: 1) Cut four 3cm cylinders of the Potato with the cork borer for each solution. Remove skin. 2) Weigh each set of four cylinders and record their mass. 3) Fill each cup with 50mL of a different sucrose solution and place four cylinders in each cup before covering the cup with saran wrap and holding it in place with a rubber band. 4) Do the above for each solution then wait overnight. 5) The next day, measure the temperature in each cup and record. 6) Remove each set of cylinders and dry them before weighing them. Record the mass and repeat with all solutions.
Results: Table showing the Initial and Final Masses of Cylinders in Sucrose Solutions Sucrose Solutions(M) Initial Mass of Cylinders (g) Final Mass of Cylinders (g) Distilled Water 6.36 7.0 0.2 6.45 6.49 0.4 6.16 5.06 0.6 7.26 5.30 0.8 6.78 4.45 1.0 6.85 4.25
Tempurature of Water(°C) 1.0M = 24 0.2M = 23 0.4M = 24 0.6M = 23 0.8M = 23 Distilled Water = 23

Natalya Zide Mrs. Moreno Creative Writing, Period 4 November 30, 2009 Heroes Quest “Hey, Alexis! You going to the Homecoming game tomorrow?” A voice shouted behind me. I smiled turning around to look at my best friend, Julia. “I’m not sure, yet.” I hollered back and watched with amusement as my friend jostled her way through the seemingly endless stream of students leaving Fairview High School. “What do you mean your not sure? I already checked. You don’t have a Volleyball game or practice. You have no reason not to go! It’s our senior year, Alexis. Alexandra L. Robert you are going!” Julia stated firmly. I rolled my eyes. Whenever she used my full name, then there was no stopping her. I ran a hand through my dirty blond hair and sighed staring at her for a little while. She had insanely curly hair with brown eyes. She was a tennis player and so we saw each other often after school. “Fine, you got me. I’ll go.” I finally said. “Yes!” Julia did an air pump “Oh and make sure you dress up with face paint and all.” She added, which made me blink. “What! No. That takes so much time!” I argued crossing my arms “Your so lazy.” Julia put her hands on her hips “Am not! I just would rather do other things….” “Yeah, like sleeping or staring out a window at nothing in particular.” “Your point?” I grinned. It was hard finding something to entertain me. Everything was just so plain and boring. Of course, I never told her this. Most people thought I was just a really laid back person who liked to do nothing most of the time. “You can’t live your life like that, Alexis.” I yelped as she smacked my arm. She gave me one of her stares that reminded me of my mom. I knew exactly what was coming, which was the worst part. “Do it or else I will come over and do it for you.” She had finally put the ultimatum down on the table. I shuddered at the memory of the last time she had played dress up on me. I held my hands up in mock surrender. “Good grief, I promise I will get spirited up for the game tomorrow.” “Awesome. I’ll meet you in the front of the Castle.” Julia referred to the nickname of Fairview High School. Our mascot was the Knight and so the students ended up nicknaming the place. The gym was called the “Dungeon”, while the cafeteria was called the “Round Table Café”. “Okay. See you tomorrow.” I waved and continued my way to the “Dungeon” for Volleyball practice.
The next day went by faster then usual. I took a test in English and a quiz in Calculus. The rest of my classes were just the typical routine. Even, Volleyball went by fast. It honestly felt like I blinked and then it was over. Only my drive home through Boulder, Colorado seemed to be slow. The over whelming amount of green still caught me off guard even though my family and I had moved in three years ago. Everything was tainted with a golden glow as the sun began to set and the temperature began to drop to its familiar chilliness. A glance at the digital watch in my car and it told me I had an hour to get ready for the game if I wanted to get there with some minutes to spare. My house was off the normal path of traffic and was one of the few that stood with the mountain bearing down on its back. It was a good thirty-minute drive to Fairview, but my parents had worked hard to get me into the best school that Boulder could supply. I drove my blue jeep into the driveway of my family’s two-story house. A small stone path surrounded y an assortment of flowers cut through the grass to the front door. Once inside, I turned on a few lights. A note explained why the house was empty of life. My parents were out running errands. “Hey.” I said to the deafening silence. I trekked upstairs to my room before blasting radio music. I switched into a better pair of blue jeans and a red shirt with “LINK Crew” in black on its back as well as a sketching of a knight. Walking into the bathroom, I pulled out red, black, and white face paint since that was the school colors. With black, I cover the right half of my face. With the red, I covered the left side of my face. Going straight down my face over my nose, I put white to separate the two other colors. Once I was done I stared at my face judging how well I had done. They colors matched my hazel eyes actually really well. Satisfied with my work, I went to my closet, and pulled out my letterman jacket. I pulled it out and looked it over. It was red with black on the shoulders and on the hood. In white it had my name “Alexandra” and on the back also in white “Robert”. It held all my patches for LINK Crew, a few academic achievements, my sports pins/bars, and on the back a knight on a rearing horse. I eventually put it on before glancing at the clock on my nightstand. 6:20 it read. I had a good ten minutes before I had to leave. I pursed my lips trying to decide if I had enough time to make a snack. “If I hurry, then I should be fine.” I answered myself. I went downstairs to the kitchen and started making a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. I sat down biting into it and stared out of the sliding glass window. The sun was just a glow behind the mountains now. Crickets were already beginning their nightly symphony. So bored. I sighed. I can’t wait to get out of high school and have an actual adventure. Something exciting. I hate waiting for it to happen. I thought to myself taking another bite out of my sandwich. My cell phone rang making me jump. For a few seconds I listened to the U2 ring tone before I pulled it to my ear. “Hello?” “It’s time for you to leave, Alexis.” Julia said in my ear I glanced at the clock and was surprised to see that my ten minutes were up. This day is seriously going by to fast. “Yeah. I’m already out of the door.” I replied rising from the chair Julia snorted, “Liar.” I grabbed the keys to the car and shoved the rest of the sandwich into my mouth. I walked out side and slammed the front door hard so Julia could hear it. “See? I’m out the door.” “Good. See you in a while, Alexia.” “See you later.” I hung up and got into my jeep.
“Alexis! You look fabulous! I couldn’t have done it better. Mommy’s so proud!” Julia wiped at invisible tears. I rolled my eyes, “Yeah, yeah.” “Gah.” I managed to say as to strong arms came from behind my and lifted me up in a type of bear hug. I laughed and turned around to face Ryan. “Shouldn’t you be getting our seats?” I asked him with a grin. He was a big fellow with red hair and green eyes. Irish by blood and by looks. “I convinced my adopted freshman to do it.” He smirked. I feel bad for the freshman that gets Ryan’s attention. The poor kid will be worked like a horse. I couldn’t help, but think. “Well let’s go.” Julia grabbed our arms and dragged us to the football field. The stadium was already crowded when we finally got to our seats. We were right smack dab in the middle and surrounded by friends or at least familiar faces. As with tradition, when our football team ran out, everyone stood to shout our fight song. Fight on, ye knights, for victory! Fight on, ye knights, for fame! The red and the white will never say die 'cause spirit always wins the game! Shout a cheer for old Fairview High. Let the world know why! We're proud of our school and praise it high, so fight! Fight! Fight, fight, fight! Or course, when Boulder High School appeared on the field there was a massive booing. Throughout the game there was random shouts of “Go home panthers!” or “For panthers you guys sure are slow!” In the end, our football team ended up annihilating the other team with a score of 42-7. Afterwards, we went to our favorite pizzeria with a ton of other people. We talked and joked about the game. Also, how badly we felt for Boulder High School and how they were the weakest group of panthers we had ever seen. It was 11:30 at night when I was finally in my car heading home. It was dark as well as empty on the road. Even my headlights gave little help and so I drove slowly. If I hadn’t, I would have missed the twelve-year old boy on the side of the road. “What the…’’ I pulled over a few feet next to the boy. He had blond hair and baby blue eyes. His face was dirty and he wore the strangest clothing. It looked like he walked just out of a medieval festival. He wore brown breeches with a red tunic held down by a leather belt. He looked at the car with a horrified expression as if it were some monster. I got out of the car suddenly very worried. “Are you alright?” I rushed to his side. He turned towards me although he still watched the car warily as if it were going to attack any seconds. “My Professor. He’s hurt.” “Did you get into a car accident?” I didn’t see any other cars anywhere “A what? It doesn’t matter. Come on!” he grabbed my arm and I was forced to follow him off into the trees near the road. “Where are we going?” I asked as I followed after his tiny form in the darkness. “Here.” He pulled me down to the ground where an old man was lying. He had a gray long beard and scholar glasses. He war a dark red robe and he clutched something on his chest. Blood poured from a wound in his stomach. I swallowed hard, watching as his face flickered with pain as he slowly turned to look at me. “Lord Elric. Is this the only one you can find?” the old man questioned “Yes. I brought a person just as you asked. Please, Professor Orchard. Don’t talk.” The boy ordered The old man laughed with a wince, “Soon. Girl, are you brave? Would you protect a child in danger?” “What?” I asked confused “This child is hunted by men who wish to kill him. Can you protect him?” “Look I’ll call 911.” I started to rise, but the old man gripped my arm with surprising strength. “Answer the question, please. We don’t have much time.” Orchard coughed I looked at the boy and bit my lip. It was hard to believe someone would be trying to kill him. He was so young. “I would help, but-“ “Promise me that you will help this boy.” The Professor stared hard into my eyes. “I promise, but-“ Professor Orchard cut me off once more, “Good. Here. Take this necklace. It will help you guard the boy. Just think of a animal and the amulet will do the rest.” He struggled to take off a small silver changed necklace with a green emerald in the shape of a tooth hanging from it. He placed it into my hand and closed my fingers around it. He looked back to Elric, “Go to the east. You’ll find the portal back into our world. Be careful. Your father will have realized what I did to get you away from his clutches. You’ll appear in the lands of Toren. I’m sorry, but you’ll have to pass through your very own lands along the way to the castle. You must get to the king. He will protect you.” “What about you! I’m not leaving you here!” Tears fell from the boys face. The old man let out a small chuckle, “Child, I have lived a long and good life. I happily used the last of it to protect you.” “Girl. Please protect him. Now go. Go before your father has time to react, Lord Elric.” Professor Orchard closed his eyes and let out a single sigh of relief. “Professor Orchard…” Elric clutched the old man and rocked back and forth. He stayed like that for a few moments and then got up. “Come on.” He said wiping the tears away angrily. He started off deeper into the woods. I looked back at the old man and then at the necklace in my hand. What on earth am I doing? I put the necklace on before racing after Elric. We walked on in silence. I trudged along still trying to figure out why I was going along with this. The two were obviously delusional or maybe this was a con. “Put this on.” I unbutton my letterman jacket and handed it to him when I saw him shiver. He nodded his thanks, “We are almost there.” He told me as he hopped over a fallen tree. “How do you know?” I asked hopping over the same log. “Because of that.” He pointed to a glow at least ten yards ahead. A tree hid the source of the light. We grew closer before finally coming to a small clearing. I gasped and my eyes widened as I saw what was causing the light. It was a giant clear orb that was the size of a small car. In the orb, was a gold cloud looking substance that shot silent lighting strikes at the ground where it hovered over. “What is that thing?” I managed to say “The portal.” Elric answered walking towards it “Wait! “ I grabbed his arm stopping him. “That thing could seriously be dangerous.” The boy raised his brow, “Professor Orchid wouldn’t tell me to go through this portal if it was dangerous. I trust him, as should you. This jacket has a knight on it. Are you a knight? Knights are supposed to be brave and loyal to their promises.” “How dare you.” I muttered angrily. I never broke my promises. It was the one thing besides being laid back that people knew me for. “Let’s go.” Before I could think about it anymore, I grabbed Elric’s hand and walked into the portal. I expected there to be a flash of light and then poof like in the stories. Instead. I walked into a pitch-black corridor. At the other end, there was light, and so I automatically walked towards it. It was silent in the hallway except for a pulsing thrum like noise that I felt more then I actually heard it. When I finally reached the light, I walked out onto a dirt road. There was meadow all around us and when I turned around the hallway was gone. It was replaced with the dirt road continuing down to a town. In the middle, was a tall mansion that loomed over the other buildings. The night was warm and a million stars shone above us as well as a full moon so bright that it made shadows. A breeze stirred causing the meadow grass to shift giving it the appearance of a wave. “Where are we?” I asked Elric. He laughed, “Home. My world. We call it Gilith. Your in the kingdom of Eri.” “Gilith?” I echoed looking around once more “Yeah. That’s the town of Toren. We could stay there for the night. Lord Toren isn't exactly a best friend of my fathers, so he won’t tell my father we’re here. However, if my father sends men, then Lord Toren will not hide us.” We began walking towards the town “Why does our father want you dead? You’re his child?” I was bewildered just by the thought of it Elric frowned, “In my world, a King is chosen by a battle. The representatives of the noble families in the kingdom are placed into an arena. They have to fight each other and the victor becomes King. The representatives aren’t chosen, however. The youngest son of the family becomes the representative. If there are no sons, then the Lord is placed into the arena. My father wants to become King. He views me as a obstacle that he can merely kill to solve.” “That’s horrible!” I replied shocked. “I know. When Professor Orchard found out, he helped me escape. A servant must have seen us because my father’s men attacked us as we were escaping. He made the portal, but got stabbed.” Elric swallowed hard at the memory “We came to your world and well, you know the rest.” “Yeah.” What have I gotten myself into? Elric wobbled ahead of me and I grabbed him. “Sorry. Just tired.” He tried walking on, but I stopped him. I knelt down in front of him. “Hop on.” “What?” Elric blinked at me. “I’ll carry you. You’ve been on your feet for who knows how long. Get on.” Seeing his look I added, “I won’t tell anyone. Before we get into town I’ll put you back down.” After a moment’s hesitation, he got on. I stood up, surprised at how light he was. I began once more to trek down the dirt road towards the town. I started to yawn about halfway and when I was near I was completely exhausted. The soft breathing against my neck told me that Elric was fast asleep. “A little late for traveling, Miss.” A guard eyed me as I came into town. “I’m aware. Is there an inn that’s open? Or a place where we could stay for the night?” I asked the man wearily “Aye, Miss. The Golden Stable is open all night. Just got straight down the road to the plaza. It’ll be the only building with light and a open door.” Was his reply. “Thank you.” I followed his instructions and saw the place he was referring to. I walked into the open door way that was filled with light. Inside I blinked at the change in lighting. Empty tables filled most the room, but a bar was next to wooden stairs that led to the rooms. A guard sat on a bar stool and behind the counter a large man wearing a brown apron talked. They both looked up when I neared. “I need a room for the night for my brother and I.” Despite my tiredness, I still had the sense to keep discreet. “A room? Aye, I got one. That’d be ten pents.” “Pents?” Was that their currency? “Aye, ten pents.” He repeated “This is all I have.” I shifted so he could see the watch on my hand. “It’s a watch with a light on it so you can see the time in the dark. It also has a stop watch.” “May I?” He moved out from behind the counter and I handed it to him. He looked it over. He hit one of the buttons and the blue like flicked on. “Magic.” He said to no one in particular as he continued to examine it. “Will it do?” “Aye. Heck. I’ll throw in a meal and breakfast, too. I reckon I can get a good price on this in the market. Let me get your key.” He went back behind the counter and grabbed a key. “Room 4 on the left.” He said handing it to me “Thanks.” I took it. I somehow managed the stairs and found the room. Unlocking it, I went into a small room with two beds and a small table in it. Gently I laid, Elric onto one of them, and took off his shoes. I did the same for myself before collapsing into the other bed. I was out before I even hit the pillow. A nudging woke me up. I grumbled something unintelligible and turned my back on the nudging. The nudging continued and I turned my head to glare at whoever was causing it. I blinked a few times when I saw it was Elric. “I had hoped last night was just a dream.” I moaned retreating back into the warm pillow. “Come on. The innkeeper says breakfast is ready. We have to eat and get ready to leave.” I groaned, “Fine. I’m getting up.” I sat up to show evidence of it. I ran my hand through my hair a few times hoping to get a few of the tangles out. Man am I thankful I don’t have Julia’s hair. It would be a rat’s nest by now. The thought of her made my heart miss a few beats. Was their a search party going on right now for me? My family must be in a frenzy. I bit my lip and shook my thoughts away from them. There was no benefit thinking about them when I couldn’t even get home if I tried. Besides, I had made a promise. “Let’s head down.” I slung my letterman jacket over my shoulder and opened the door to the room. He followed me out and down the stairs. “Up already, Miss? From how exhausted you were I’d thought you were going to sleep in some.” The innkeeper commented as we sat down at a table. “If only,” I smiled as I thought of a poem by Robert Frost, “But I have miles to go before I sleep.” The innkeeper gave a puzzled look. “Well what can I get for you this morning?” He asked “I’ll have eggs and bacon, please.” Elric replied “Same here.” I told him when he looked for my order “Alright. It’ll be out in a couple minutes.” He moved on to a different table. I noticed that more people were coming down and from the window I saw a good amount of people walking the streets. Even a couple of horses and wagons. The food arrived just as the innkeeper told and I wolfed it down. Breakfast had never tasted as good at the moment. “I just realized that I don’t know your name.” Elric said suddenly looking up from his food. “My name is Alexandra. Most people call me Alexis though.” I told him between mouthfuls. “It’s nice to meet you, Alexis. My first name is Conner.” “Conner?” I’d assumed Elric was his first name. “Likewise, Conner.” When we were done eating, I returned the key to the innkeeper. With a small wave goodbye, Conner and I walked out of the inn. I hadn't been paying attention last night, but there was a lovely fountain in the plaza. Further into the town on the main street was the mansion, which was a good five stories high. Merchants were already in their shops and there was a steady flow of travelers. I bit my lip as we walked to the fountain since everyone stared at me. Bright red wasn’t exactly a discreet color nor was my jeans and letterman jacket. Conner sat down on a small stone bench by the fountain and pulled something out of his shirt. It was what appeared to be a folded piece of paper. He unfolded it revealing a hand drawn map of the Kingdom.
[insert drawing here] xD
“This is the Kingdom of Eri. Right now we are in the main town of Toren.” He pointed to the middle of Toren. “The most direct route to the Capital City is through Dag and Elric. We must hurry or else my father will have more time to secure his boarders. We can’t pass through Lorel either because Lord Lorel is a huge supporter of my father. His territory would be even more difficult to pass through. At least in Elric, I know I can trust a few people to help hide us.” Conner explained
